The Melbourne Retail Water Agencies typically expect infrastructure to have a service life of at least 100 years. This requirement reflects community expectations of the Water Agencies’ operational and financial performance. The performance of pressure and non pressure (Water Supply and Sewerage) systems significantly depend on the attributes of the materials and products used in its construction. The appropriate selection of pipeline system products and materials is paramount to achieving life expectancies.
Each Water agency is responsible for accepting or excluding products as being suitable for use within its licensed district of responsibility. They are also responsible for nominating variations to product and material use specified on the individual product data sheets provided in the product search section of this portal.
National Product Appraisal Program
The Melbourne Retail Water Agencies utilise the National product appraisal program administered by the Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA). It is recommended that all manufacturers, suppliers, distributors or agents who have a product that may be suitable for use by the water industry
utilise this program.

MRWA Product Application Forms
Each Melbourne Retail Water Agency has its own individual product authorisation process requiring the lodgement of an application form by the product manufacturer, supplier, distributor or agent.

National Water Industry Product Specifications
Product Specifications are the means for the Water Agencies to specify their product and material requirements to manufacturers, suppliers, importers, distributors or agents.
Each specification clearly specifies essential performance requirements, attributes and test methods. These must be specified in a manner that can be measured and objectively verified by the manufacturer and quality assurance certification options.
The Melbourne Retail Water Agencies specify the product specifications developed by the Water Services Association of Australia.
